Comparison of Media Texts of two genres, one relating to the genre of my own

Comparison of Media Posters

Film Posters

Good Luck Chuck (2007)

This is the poster for the comedy film 'Good Luck Chuck', which is about a man who has a curse that others may consider a gift; anytime Chuck hooks up with a woman, that woman's dream man is then waiting around the corner, every time Chuck hooks up, the woman is married within days. The woman in the poster is Chuck's crush, however his dilemma is that he cannot hook up in case her dream man is waiting round the corner also. The main image shows chuck and his 'crush' in an elevator signalled to be going down, this reflects on the relationship of this couple, destined to fail. The facial expression on the woman indicates a fun loving, happy person who innocence gets the better of her, she looks as if she has no idea about the roller-coaster relationship she's about to get into, whereas Chuck's facial expression indicates that he's ridden this ride before and he knows exactly whats to come. The poster is accompanied by text that helps briefly explain the story ''True love is a blessing and a curse. She's the blessing. He's cursed''.

The Mechanic (2011)

This is the poster for The Mechanic, an action film starring Jason Statham. Jason plays a hitman, and the story follows him on one of his very detailed and planned out jobs. The poster features typical action-hero attributes that always have and always will engage the reader and have them excited to know what happens throughout the film. Jason is posing a typical 'Bad-boy' look, staring away from the camera with a serious facial expression, notice he is holding a bag, and an explosion/fire has just broken out behind him, this combined indicated that he has just casued that destruction and is now fleeing from the scene. The lighting in the picture features a dark and mysterious man, someone who has something to hide (hense half his face being covered by shadow). There isnt as much text on this poster, and my only reasoning as to why this might be is that this film is much more serious than ''Good Luck Chuck'', and captions would only ruin the intenseness of the poster.

Comparison of Magazine cover

 Total Film issue 101

Charlie and the Chocolate facotory was re-made and released in 2005, starring Johnny Depp as Willy Wonka. This magazine cover is particually effective due to the wacky colour choices and bold outstanding text. ''Grab your golden ticket'' is a perfect strapline for accompany this cover, not only does it promote the film but it also engages its audience with the film and magazine. The main image creates a mysterious outlook on Willy Wonka, with his hand and hat half covering his face and a very unique fashion attire, this poster for sure gives a full impression of this mans personality... bonkers! The main headline isnt focused mainly at Charlie and the Chocolate factory but it does give the film a headline (Charlie and the Chocolate factory is a must see this summer). My only words of con is that the page seems a little overcrowded with colours and text, other than that this magazine cover is great.

Total Film issue 145

Mark Wahlberg stars in this action packed thriller as Max Payne. This magazine cover is perfect on so many levels, for example consumers are immediately involved in the image due to the 3D effect used on the guns he is holding, asif those guns are literally escaping from the page. This cover is alot less over crowded than the previous cover, and I belive this enforces the consumer to concentrate on the main story of the magazine which is 'Max Payne'. Strapline ''Wahlberg finds his bourne'' leaves the consumer wanting to know what it is and how he obtained it. The lighting in the picture is very dark, perhaps the film follows a story of stress, heartache and negative emotions alike? The expression of Marks face indicated your conventional hero, steriotypically cool, calm and badass, not the person your about to mess with. My only critisism on this magazine cover is that it doesnt really tell you much about the film, however thats my personal opinion and others may consider that to be a good thing.

Comparison of Film trailers
500 Days of Summer (2009)
This is the film trailer for 500 Days of Summer, a romantic comedy starring Joseph Gorden-Levit and Zooey Deschanel. The trailer features typical attributes that you'd expect from a romantic comedy trailer, including the obvious scenes of compassion and love, aswell as humourous scenes. The trailer begins with the couples first encounter, when alone in an elevator, they share their passion for the Indie and  'The Smiths'. After showing this scene the trailer backs up a little and shows us the background of the story, and from there on out follows the story of the film, with narration to help people understand the different scenes. Unlike many other trailers, this one does not consist of jump cuts, suggesting that the film is not action packed and yearning for adventure. The sound throughout the film consists of diagetic and non diagetic sounds, non diagetic to compliment the trailer.
The Expendables (2010)

This is the trailer for The Expendables, an action packed adventure starring hollywoods top action hero alumini. The movie is about a team of mercenarys given the assignment to take out a corrupt military leader and a rogue CIA operative on a Latin American island. The trailer features explosions, heavy gun fire and countless fight scenes, the perfect trifecta for an action movie. Jump cuts and non diagetic sounds take over this trailer for the most part, due too the fact that the cinematography and picture is impressive enough to advertise the film, there is a less need for sound. It would appear that there is no particular storyline to the trailer, however after watching the film, the trailer makes a little more sense. My only concern is that the trailer focus's more on the impressive cast as apposed to the actual film, however it convinced me to go see it so I suppose its done its job.
